Sol Ruca didn’t just want any regular finishing move when she started putting together her WWE arsenal. She wanted something that belonged to her, fit her background, and could stop anyone in their tracks.

During her appearance on the No Contest Wrestling Podcast, Ruca was asked about the origin of the Soul Snatcher, a move that immediately got fans replaying clips because it looks nothing like a standard WWE finisher. Ruca explained that she wanted a move she could use against any opponent, regardless of size, while still making sure it tied back to what made her different.

“When I was thinking about a finish, obviously I wanted something that I could do on anyone, no matter if they’re bigger than me, smaller than me, something that was unique to my background, something that, yeah, it’s just like unique to me and you don’t see every day.”

Ruca said she started thinking about her gymnastics past and how she could bring those skills into the wrestling ring in a way that made sense. That is where the Soul Snatcher was born. Ruca revealed that the move comes from an old gymnastics move she used to do on the bars.

“So, I was kind of brainstorming, going through my head about like some of the things I used to love doing in gymnastics, and how I could translate that into wrestling.”

“That’s kind of where this Soul Snatcher came from. It’s an old move I used to do on the bars called a straddle back where essentially I’m doing a reverse gainer where I’m moving backwards, flipping forwards instead of moving forwards, flipping backwards, if that makes sense.”

Then she gave the cleanest explanation possible for how the move went from gymnastics to WWE. Ruca was also asked where the name Soul Snatcher came from. She said the name came from music, and once she heard it, she knew it fit.

“And now instead of catching a bar, I’m catching humans. So that’s kind of where it came from.”

“I believe I heard it in a song and I was like, that’s it.”

The Soul Snatcher has already become one of the most recognizable finishers in WWE’s women’s division. It stands out because it looks dangerous, different, and completely tied to who Sol Ruca is as a performer.

That is exactly what a finisher should do. It tells fans who she is before she even has to say a word.
