Skye Blue knew she wanted to become a professional wrestler after one hardcore match, but her mom was not exactly ready to co-sign that career choice.

During her appearance on Close Up with Renee Paquette, the AEW star opened up about how she first got hooked on wrestling. Skye explained that her parents had been fans their whole lives, so wrestling was always around her growing up. Still, it did not really hit her until high school, when a bad day turned into the start of her wrestling dream. Renee Paquette asked Skye what got her into wrestling, and Skye said her mom tried to help her shake off a rough day by having her sit down and watch.

“So my parents have been fans their whole life. So it was like always on in the house, but I didn’t really get into it till I was in high school. And I had a bad day at school or whatever. My mom’s like, ‘Just come sit down and watch this.’ And I was like, ‘Okay.’”

That was when everything clicked for Skye. She said a hardcore match was on, and instead of being scared off by it, she immediately saw something she wanted to do herself. Her mom, however, had a very different reaction. Skye remembered telling her mother she was going to become a wrestler, only for her mom to shut that down right away.

“And it was somebody’s hardcore match on. I was like, ‘Oh, this is cool.’ And I looked at her, I was like, ‘I’m going to do that.’ And she was like, ‘No, you’re not.’ And so then I had to prove her wrong.”

That “no” clearly did not last. Skye went on to find a wrestling school near her, contacted them herself, and asked if they would train an underage girl as long as her parents came with her. That is a pretty wild jump from watching a hardcore match on TV to chasing a real career in the ring.

Skye’s mom may have tried to shut the whole thing down in the moment, but that reaction appears to have only added fuel to the fire. Skye Blue eventually turned that teenage declaration into an AEW career, and the hardcore side of wrestling that caught her attention in the first place is still a huge part of her identity today.

What do you think about Skye Blue’s mom telling her she was not becoming a wrestler right after Skye made up her mind? Do you think that doubt helped push her even harder? Please share your thoughts and feedback in the comments section below.
