Sheamus’ WWE status just got a lot more confusing, because an old claim about his contract does not line up cleanly with the new word about him leaving.
The current word is that Sheamus is set to leave WWE after his contract expired, and this is not being framed as a release. Fightful Select stated that Sheamus turned down a contract extension, meaning WWE did not cut him loose. He chose not to re-up.
WWE approached Sheamus about a restructured deal while he was out with an injury, but he rejected it pretty quickly. His deal was already said to be expiring within months anyway, so there was no need for WWE to release him and start the usual 90-day waiting period.
That part is big enough on its own, but now there is another wrinkle. Back in September 2024, Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer claimed that Sheamus had signed a new five-year deal with WWE. That makes the current situation look odd, because if Sheamus signed a five-year contract in 2024, he would not be anywhere close to free agency in 2026.
WWE usually signs main roster talent to deals that run three or five years. So if Meltzer’s 2024 claim was accurate, Sheamus would still have plenty of time left on that contract. That means one of a few things may be true. Either the old contract information was wrong, the deal was not actually for five years, something changed behind the scenes, or the current exit story is missing a key piece.
Meltzer has been wrong before, and this could be another one of those cases. At the same time, Sheamus’ situation is now a little harder to read because there are two pieces of information that do not fully match.
The timing also matters because this comes after WWE was said to be renegotiating deals with several talents earlier this year in a much more aggressive way. Back in May, WWE was said to have approached numerous wrestlers about taking less money to stay with the company. If they didn’t like the new terms, they could walk.
Now the big question is what the real contract situation actually is. If Sheamus is truly leaving, then WWE is losing one of its longest-running names. If that 2024 five-year deal was real, then there is clearly more to this story than just a contract running out.
