CM Punk’s WrestleMania 42 weekend didn’t just spark headlines because of what happened on camera — it also led to strong reactions from wrestling veterans who believe the situation should have never reached that point.

Speaking on The Russo Brand, Al Snow addressed the viral incident involving CM Punk and a fan at the MGM Grand, where Punk knocked a fan’s phone down after the individual filmed Bayley hugging AJ Lee near the elevators. While many debated Punk’s reaction, Snow made it clear that he believes the bigger issue wasn’t Punk — it was security. Snow explained that situations like this should be stopped before they ever begin, placing responsibility squarely on the people tasked with protecting talent.

“The incident should never even occur. That's on the security. They're there for a reason. They're not there to just stand idly by. They should be accompanying the talent to and from and in and out of the building just to prevent such things from occurring.”

He continued by pointing out that reacting after the fact isn’t what security is meant to do, saying their job is to stop the situation before it escalates.

“Security company's supposed to be there to prevent that situation from occurring in the first place and they were obviously not doing what they needed to do in that moment.”

Snow also addressed criticism of Punk’s reaction, arguing that while people can debate how Punk handled the situation, the reality is that Punk never should have been forced into that position in the first place.

“You can sit there and put the heat on either party… but the real heat, I think, goes on the security company. Well, you know, Punk shouldn't have behaved in that manner — well, he shouldn't have been put in that position to behave in that manner.”

At the same time, Snow didn’t let the fan off the hook either. He described the behavior as aggressive and disrespectful, especially after the individuals involved were told to back off.

“The fans shouldn't have been that aggressive and they were being very obnoxious and disrespectful… clearly didn't follow etiquette or protocol or was respectful in any way of personal time.”

Jeff Lane drew a clear line between normal fan interaction and what he viewed as invasive behavior, explaining that public figures expect attention — but not harassment.

“It comes with the territory where people are going to recognize you — hey, can I get a picture? Would you mind signing this? But to me, that's completely different than going up with your phone right in somebody's face and holding it there.”

Another key factor Jeff pointed to was the personal element of the situation. Because AJ Lee — Punk’s wife — was involved in the moment being filmed, Snow said Punk’s reaction shouldn’t be viewed without that context.

“Especially when she asked you to go away and you don't go away… So you got a man up in your wife's face like that. I don't fault him for reacting that way emotionally in that situation.”

Despite defending Punk in several ways, Snow acknowledged that the situation wasn’t completely black and white, saying responsibility existed on multiple sides — but still stressing that proper security would have prevented everything.

“Nobody was 100% right. Nobody was 100% wrong on either side of the fence… but security should have been there to keep it from even occurring in the first place. Just shouldn't have happened.”

Jeff also expanded the conversation beyond just WWE security, questioning how fans were able to access the area so easily inside the hotel in the first place. He suggested that stronger access rules during major events could prevent incidents like this from happening again.

“If those fans — assuming they're not staying at that hotel — they don't have a room, right? Why are they allowed in there to begin with?”

He added that hotels hosting major events should take additional steps to protect talent staying on property.

“Wouldn't you want to keep people out of there that are not staying there to avoid incidences like this and to protect the talent?”

The incident itself remains a major talking point from WrestleMania 42 weekend, especially after video footage surfaced showing the moment Punk knocked the fan’s phone down before security intervened. With additional claims surfacing about other alleged incidents and police reviewing surveillance footage, the full timeline of what happened inside the MGM Grand is still being pieced together.
