Sami Zayn’s WWE Championship win sparked a wild theory that the title was payback for accepting a massive salary cut, but the known details do not line up with that claim.
Dave Meltzer addressed the situation in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter after Kevin Nash and Sean Oliver discussed Zayn’s contract on the Kliq This podcast. Oliver suggested Zayn may have received the championship after agreeing to have his salary cut in half.
“The last time Sami Zayn was significantly in the wrestling news — someone might call me a cynic or worse — was in regard to the pay reductions, right? His was one that was publicly reported in a significant reduction of a nice salary. Am I wrong to connect any dots?”
The problem was that Zayn taking a 50 percent pay cut was never established publicly. Nash appeared unsure about the claim and told Oliver that he did not know whether Zayn’s salary had actually been reduced.
“I don’t know that he was reduced.”
Nash then said he had heard Zayn agreed to one of the TKO pay cuts, but both men eventually admitted they may have mixed up podcast discussion with outside coverage. Their exchange never produced confirmation that Zayn accepted a reduced WWE contract. Meltzer said Zayn’s name had come up internally in connection with the salary-cut talk, but he was never given firm confirmation that Zayn was one of the wrestlers who agreed to it.
“His name was brought up internally to me, but never as 100 percent.”
More importantly, WWE’s explanation for the contract reductions does not appear to fit Zayn’s situation. Meltzer said the company told him those offers were aimed at wrestlers who were already in danger of being released because creative had nothing for them.
“Based on what WWE told me directly when it came to pay cuts, their version is that everyone asked were guys who were going to be cut because creative had nothing for them, but they would give them a new deal at a decreased rate to see if something popped up.”
That is where the Zayn theory starts falling apart. Zayn was consistently featured on WWE television and remained part of major storylines, unlike several wrestlers whose roles had been dramatically reduced before their contract situations became an issue.
“Zayn was a guy always used, unlike a Ridge Holland, New Day, Sheamus or others who were not being used when asked to take the cut.”
Meltzer also warned that Zayn’s name appearing in speculation does not make the story true. He said this was far from the first time Zayn had been dragged into contract chatter without solid confirmation behind it.
“This would not be the first, or fifth for that matter, time his name didn’t come up in speculation on that subject.”
There may have been internal discussion involving Zayn, but the available explanation for WWE’s pay cuts points toward wrestlers the company was no longer using. Zayn was still heavily featured, making it difficult to believe his title win was some consolation prize for surrendering half his salary.
