Sami Zayn’s night got even uglier after SmackDown went off the air, because the Toronto crowd absolutely let him have it following his betrayal of Kevin Owens.
WWE posted footage after the August 21 show showing Sami making his way out of the arena following the chaotic main event. A massive “Sami sucks” chant broke out as he walked past the fans.
Sami clearly wasn’t enjoying the reaction. He looked visibly angry, pointed directly at people in the crowd and shouted back at them as the chants continued. That reaction came just minutes after Sami directly cost Kevin Owens the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Owens was challenging CM Punk in the SmackDown main event when Sami got involved with the referee down. He first sent Owens into the ring post before things got even worse later in the match.
Sami slid the WWE Championship into the ring, but Owens refused to use it against Punk and handed the belt back to him. Sami responded by smashing Owens with the championship. Punk immediately took advantage, hitting Owens with another GTS and getting the pin to retain the title. Sami then went after Punk and Owens after the match while screaming about wanting justice and claiming Punk had stolen the WWE Championship from him.
The frustration had been building all night. Earlier on SmackDown, Sami complained backstage that Punk was defending the championship in Toronto instead of him and questioned why he still wasn’t getting another title opportunity. By the time the show ended, Sami had taken matters into his own hands and screwed his longtime friend out of the biggest match of the night. The Toronto crowd made sure he heard exactly how they felt about it afterward.
