Sami Zayn never wanted to become a straight-up heel — and according to a new backstage report, he fought to make sure his current character stayed much more complicated than that.
While speaking during a Self Made Session, Self Made Pro revealed that Sami pushed back internally when WWE creative started moving toward a more traditional heel direction for him on SmackDown. According to the report, Sami specifically argued that his evolving relationship with fans should be treated as something more nuanced rather than simply turning him into a heel.
“He didn’t really want to turn heel, and he argued to creative, like, ‘Hey, why don’t we tell a nuanced story here?’ Because he told them, ‘I don’t think I’m a bad guy. I feel like my relationship with the fans is evolving, but I’m not necessarily a bad guy.’”
This lines up almost perfectly with comments Zayn himself made recently while speaking to the Toronto Sun. After fans began labeling him a heel following his strange and aggressive segment involving Trick Williams and the Gingerbread Man mascot on SmackDown, Sami publicly pushed back on the idea that he had fully embraced a hee role.
“I’ll disagree with your statement—I fully turned heel. I think I’m trying to play this one a little different.”
Sami also explained that his goal was never to create a clean-cut heel turn, but rather to split audience reactions and create something more unpredictable.
“I had this idea for a slight character shift that would be a little outside the box and split the audience a little bit.”
That storyline took a bizarre turn on SmackDown when Sami compared himself to Bob Dylan “going electric,” complained about disrespect from Trick Williams, and eventually attacked the Gingerbread Man mascot by kicking it below the belt, beating it down, and ripping off one of its arms.
Now, with this report revealing Sami actively resisted becoming a standard heel, the entire direction surrounding his SmackDown character suddenly makes much more sense.
Instead of WWE simply flipping him into a heel role, it appears Sami has been intentionally trying to create a more layered and polarizing character where fans themselves decide how they want to react to him.
Do you think Sami Zayn’s current character work is more interesting than a traditional heel turn, or should WWE just fully commit to making him a heel already? Leave your thoughts and feedback below.
