Roman Reigns may already have his next massive WWE championship showdown lined up — and the company appears to be taking it all the way to Saudi Arabia. After Sami Zayn stunned CM Punk to recapture the WWE Championship on September 11, that surprise title change is now looking like a major piece of WWE’s Crown Jewel 2026 plans.
PWInsider Elite reported that several people within WWE they have spoken to believe Crown Jewel 2026 will be headlined by Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn taking on World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns for the WWE Crown Jewel Championship.
That would put WWE’s two top champions across the ring from each other in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, while also bringing Zayn back to the country where his first WWE Championship reign began. Zayn captured the title at Night of Champions in June before that reign lasted only nine days.
There is also an immediate wrinkle with Reigns before WWE can even get to Saudi Arabia. Roman is scheduled to defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Penta on tonight’s September 14 episode of WWE RAW in Mexico City. If WWE is moving forward with Reigns vs. Zayn as the Crown Jewel champion-versus-champion match, then those plans would seemingly take Penta winning the title tonight off the table.
The September 11 title switch suddenly makes a lot more sense with that possibility on the table. Zayn defeated Punk during the September 11 episode of SmackDown after a chaotic finish involving Candice LeRae, Johnny Gargano and Kevin Owens, with Owens accidentally blasting Punk with the championship before Zayn hit the Helluva Kick.
There’s another major reason WWE could prefer Zayn in that spot. The outlet noted that going with Zayn vs. Reigns allows WWE to avoid immediately running Punk vs. Reigns again after the two already headlined night two of WrestleMania 42 in April.
It would also guarantee Zayn’s second championship reign gets significantly more breathing room than his first. Punk returned from his post-WrestleMania hiatus and ended Zayn’s original nine-day run on RAW, but a Crown Jewel showdown with Reigns would mean WWE intends to keep the title on Zayn considerably longer this time.
That lines up with previous word that WWE had a specific storyline and timeline behind the decision to put the championship back on Zayn. What initially looked like a shocking television title change could actually have been WWE moving the pieces into place for one of its biggest international matches of the year.
