AEW’s RJ City couldn’t resist taking a shot at WWE Radio—and he did it just days after Thunder Rosa officially confirmed she was leaving Busted Open.
Appearing at Mystery Wrestling 27, RJ City poked fun at WWE’s new SiriusXM partnership by joking that AEW needed to launch its own competing station, calling it “AEW Radio” and that he’d be doing it with Tony Schiavone.
“I would like to announce exclusively on this stream that we’re starting AEW Radio. We might take a local channel in Duluth. It’s gonna be me and Tony Schiavone at 6:00 a.m.—just easy listening.”
The line got a laugh, but the timing made it hard to ignore. RJ’s joke came only days after Thunder Rosa announced she was leaving Busted Open following four years on the show. Her departure ended weeks of speculation that started when WWE announced WWE Radio and noticeably left the AEW star out of every announcement.
Before Rosa confirmed her exit, Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that people close to the situation believed she was finished with the show. Meltzer also questioned whether an AEW wrestler could realistically remain on a WWE-controlled platform once the new partnership took effect.
“Thunder Rosa had been on the show but she’s not listed in any of the press releases… I would think given this would be a WWE controlled show that it would be impossible to keep an AEW talent on it.”
RJ City never mentioned Rosa by name, but his fake “AEW Radio” announcement landed at a time when WWE’s growing presence on SiriusXM has become one of wrestling’s biggest talking points. Whether it was just a throwaway joke or a jab at WWE’s new radio empire, fans in attendance immediately understood the reference.
