Penta wanted to see WWE and AAA get creative with a six-sided ring earlier this year, and Rey Mysterio isn’t completely shutting that door. He just knows from experience that actually wrestling inside one isn’t nearly as fun as it looks.
While speaking with Allenownz Wrasslin, Mysterio was asked about AAA potentially bringing back the six-sided ring it used during an earlier era. The interviewer floated the idea of using a traditional four-sided ring for AAA’s United States events while bringing the six-sided setup back for Mexico.
The Master of the 619 made it clear there isn’t a confirmed plan to make that happen. However, he said AAA has never been against the idea and suggested it could potentially be considered next year.
“Wow. I mean, it’s… we’re never against doing it. We just have to have a petition to be able to see if we can do something like that. I think that’s something we can probably think about to possibly do next year.”
That doesn’t mean Rey is volunteering to be the first person inside it. When asked whether there are actually disadvantages to working in a six-sided ring, Mysterio said his own experience tells him there absolutely are. The biggest problem is the ropes, which become much tighter around the additional sides and don’t provide the same give.
“Me personally, my experience? Yes. I feel like the ropes don’t give as much. So if you’re hitting any of the angles, the ropes are completely tight. Like, you can’t… it’s hard to springboard. It’s hard to bounce.”
That’s a particularly big issue for someone whose career has been built around springboards and using the ropes to create movement. For Rey, the traditional wrestling ring simply feels more natural.
“A ring was made to be four corners, and you get that spring, you get that motion, you get that comfortness of being inside a four-sided ring.”
The ropes aren’t Rey’s only complaint either. He also remembers the additional corners being much harder, making the entire setup more difficult to work in.
“With six, I just… I personally think it makes it a little bit more difficult. The corners are much harder as well.”
Interestingly, Penta was pushing almost the exact opposite argument back in July. During an appearance on the Battleground Podcast, he was asked whether he preferred four or six sides and immediately picked the latter.
“Six-sided, dude. Wow. Why not? You know, why not? Now in these times, WWE can do everything. I just need to put imagination for everything in the job, and why not, bro?”
So the idea clearly has at least one enthusiastic supporter and one considerably more cautious veteran. Penta would happily go to war inside six sides, while Rey remembers exactly what those extra two sides do to the ropes and corners. There’s no indication AAA is bringing the six-sided ring back right now, but Rey didn’t close the door either. If enough people want it, 2027 could at least put the conversation back on the table.
