WWE’s decision to suddenly end Alexa Bliss and Tatum Paxley’s Women’s Tag Team Championship reign left a lot of fans wondering what the point was. Now, it appears there wasn’t some huge storyline reason behind the switch — WWE simply wanted to shake things up.
During a recent Q&A session, WrestleVotes was asked why Michin and B-Fab were given the Women’s Tag Team Championships on the October 23 episode of SmackDown. According to him, WWE is essentially willing to “hot potato” the championships right now as a way of creating more movement within the women’s tag team division.
The idea is to give different teams opportunities and keep the championships moving when there isn’t necessarily a major storyline driving the division. In this case, putting the belts on Michin and B-Fab was apparently part of WWE’s attempt to generate some additional interest.
“They hot potato it a little bit. It’s one of those things where, creatively, they wanna kinda stimulate the tag team division and hot potato the tag team titles like that when there’s not a lot going on. It’s about drumming up a little bit more interest in the women’s tag team division.”
That definitely puts Bliss and Paxley’s extremely short reign into a little more perspective. The two had only held the championships for around two weeks and hadn’t even picked up a successful title defense before WWE moved the belts again.
Michin and B-Fab’s victory wasn’t exactly clean either. Paxley was preparing to hit Cemetery Drive when Jade Cargill punched her behind the referee’s back, allowing Michin to capitalize with a Styles Clash and capture the championships.
Fans immediately questioned the decision, especially considering Bliss and Paxley barely had enough time to establish themselves as champions. Some wondered why WWE bothered putting the titles on them at all if the plan was to move on almost immediately, while others criticized the overall direction of the women’s tag team division.
Whether moving the belts around more frequently actually creates that interest is another question entirely, but it appears Michin and B-Fab’s win wasn’t the result of some major change of plans. WWE simply wanted to give another team an opportunity and get people talking about the division again.
What do you think about WWE’s decision to move the Women’s Tag Team Titles around more frequently? Do you think it will create more interest in the division, or make the championships feel less important? Let us know in the comments
