Dominik Mysterio hasn’t exactly been all over AAA programming as Mega Champion — and now Konnan is explaining why.
While speaking on the Keeping It 100 podcast, Konnan addressed Dominik’s limited AAA schedule and made it clear there is a reason AAA hasn’t rushed him into more title matches. According to Konnan, the idea is to protect the championship and make those matches feel important.
The topic came up after Dominik previously said WWE had “lightning in a bottle” with him but didn’t know what to do with it. He also made it clear he was ready to defend the AAA Mega Championship at Clash in Italy if WWE wanted to add him to the card.
Konnan first pointed out that Dominik and El Grande Americano are two of AAA’s strongest acts right now. He also admitted that Dominik’s crowd reaction is unusual because even though he is technically a heel, people still love him.
“What I will say is that Grande and him are the two most… even though Dom’s a heel, it’s weird because he’s a heel but the people love him, right? So they’ll put him in as a babyface, you know, just because people like him.”
Disco Inferno then asked whether AAA was keeping Dominik away from regular matches because the El Grande Americano storyline was so hot. Disco suggested that putting Dominik on the same show could make the AAA Mega Champion feel like the second-biggest angle, which would not be ideal for the titleholder.
“So, we were talking about Dominik not wrestling. I’m going to run this by you, Konnan. The fact that the Grande Americano angle was so hot, you don’t want to… they haven’t really been featuring Dom because if you featured him, he would be like the second angle on the show. You don’t want to treat your champion in a secondary angle. Everybody would have looked at the Americano angle as the best angle, so you just keep him out of the way.”
Disco then asked if the creative team prefers to protect the belt and keep championship matches special, especially with people like The Undertaker involved in discussions: “Do you know from the creative meetings and being with those guys, like with Taker and stuff, is Taker one of those guys that likes to protect the belt and keep the championship matches very important?”
Konnan’s answer was short, but it said everything, as he confirmed that is exactly why Dominik Mysterio hasn’t been competing much as the AAA Mega Champion on AAA programming, saying, “Yes.”
That explanation lines up with Dominik’s current situation. He may not be wrestling constantly as AAA Mega Champion, but Konnan’s comments suggest that is by design, not neglect. Instead of throwing the title into every possible slot, AAA appears to be keeping Dominik’s championship defenses limited so they feel bigger when they finally happen.
Dominik clearly wants more to do, and fans are waiting to see whether the AAA Mega Championship will be defended soon enough. For now, though, Konnan’s update makes it sound like the company is being careful with both Dominik and the title.
Do you think AAA is right to protect Dominik Mysterio’s title matches, or should he be defending the AAA Mega Championship more often? Please share your thoughts and feedback in the comments below.
