Finn Bálor bringing back The Demon after such a long absence wasn’t just WWE digging up an old persona for a cool Halloween surprise. According to a new report, there’s a much bigger reason WWE pulled the trigger on the transformation now.
During a Q&A session, WrestleVotes was asked why WWE decided to revive The Demon for Bálor’s confrontation with GUNTHER. The explanation was pretty straightforward: WWE sees The Demon vs. GUNTHER as a significantly bigger attraction than simply booking regular Finn Bálor against The Ring General.
“Yeah, it’s to go into a program and an official match with GUNTHER. It opens a lot of eyeballs than just Finn Bálor vs. GUNTHER. The Demon vs. GUNTHER is a marquee match — that’s the reason.”
That also gives a lot more meaning to what happened on the October 30 episode of SmackDown. The Demon’s return came at the end of Danhausen’s bizarre experiment after GUNTHER crashed the segment and absolutely wrecked everyone in his path.
GUNTHER first took out Danhausen before dealing with an army of miniature Danhausens produced by the cloning machine. Things only changed once the lights went out and The Demon emerged to confront him.
Bálor then survived GUNTHER’s offense before sending him through a table with a running dropkick. He finished the destruction by climbing a ladder and delivering a massive Coup de Grace onto GUNTHER through the announce table.
After keeping the persona away for so long, the company apparently believes GUNTHER is the kind of opponent worth bringing it out for — and this time, the confrontation appears designed to lead somewhere.
Do you think The Demon vs. GUNTHER feels like a bigger marquee match than regular Finn Bálor vs. GUNTHER? Let us know what you think in the comments.
