Roman Reigns defending the WWE Championship against Penta looked fairly straightforward when WWE first booked it. Hours before RAW in Mexico City, however, there is suddenly a little more reason to pay attention to how WWE plans on ending the night.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Live on September 14, Bryan Alvarez said he was told WWE wants to make sure the Mexico City crowd goes home happy. He then pointed to something interesting happening around the Reigns-Penta match.

Alvarez wasn’t reporting that WWE has decided to put the championship on Penta. He was careful to leave room for Reigns to retain, but the fact that Penta had become a slight betting favorite was enough for him to warn against treating the result as a foregone conclusion.

“I was told yesterday, like, they’re gonna send these fans home happy one way or the other. If you look online right now, Penta has become the very slight betting favorite in this match.

So… I will just say, don’t think there’s no chance that Penta could win the title tonight. I’m sure if he does, it will not be a lengthy reign, but I will just say it’s not impossible that he wins the title tonight.

Now, if Roman beats him, I don’t want everyone coming out and saying, ‘Hey, you said…’ I’m just telling you what I was told.”

Penta earned the match by defeating his brother Rey Fenix in the main event of the RAW episode taped for August 31. Reigns confronted him immediately afterwards, raising the championship in his face while Penta stood his ground.

Mexico City now gets the payoff on September 14. Penta will have the crowd behind him, Reigns will have the championship, and WWE apparently has some kind of happy ending in mind. Whether those three things are connected is what everyone will find out on RAW.
