Paul Heyman isn’t taking full credit for Brock Lesnar’s WWE career, even though their pairing became one of the most iconic manager-wrestler duos in company history.
During his interview with Chris Van Vliet, Heyman was asked what Brock Lesnar’s career would have looked like without Paul Heyman. Instead of making it about himself, Heyman flipped the question and admitted Brock still would have been a massive success. When the question came up, Heyman made it clear that Lesnar didn’t need him to become a star.
“He would. Brock Lesnar would still be massively successful. I wonder what Paul Heyman’s career would look like without Brock Lesnar.”
Heyman then explained how his own legacy changed over time. He had already made his mark with the Dangerous Alliance in WCW and then completely changed the wrestling business with ECW. But once he got paired with Brock Lesnar in WWE, his career took another turn.
“My legacy in my early days was the Dangerous Alliance in WCW. That legacy changed with the work I put in with ECW. I came out of ECW and I’m in WWE. And what would my legacy have been in WWE? Well, that certainly changed when I got put with Brock Lesnar.”
Heyman said the Brock connection became so powerful that just seeing him sit beside Roman Reigns years later immediately changed the entire dynamic of WWE.
“And then to the point where just me sitting on a couch with Roman Reigns because I’m Brock Lesnar’s advocate was an incredible shift in the dynamic in WWE because you couldn’t imagine Brock Lesnar’s advocate with another top star like Roman Reigns.”
Heyman admitted Brock’s career would still have been huge, but he said their pairing added something special that would not have been the same with anyone else.
“What would Brock Lesnar’s career have been? Massively successful, just not the same as it was. We are a very unique pairing and we work well together behind the scenes and that transpires on camera.”
He also pointed to the trust and chemistry between them as the thing that made it hit so hard on screen. That is a pretty honest answer from Heyman. Brock Lesnar was always going to be a freak athlete and a box-office beast, but Heyman knows their act became something WWE could never duplicate.
