Stephanie McMahon spent years making WWE fans hate her, and apparently some of them took the job a little too seriously. While talking with Lash Legend, Stephanie revealed she actually received death threats during her run as one of WWE’s top villains.
The moment came on What’s Your Story? after Lash explained that she stopped paying attention to social media years ago because of the abuse she received after missing a game-winning shot during her basketball career. That immediately reminded Stephanie of her own experience playing one of WWE’s most hated characters.
“I’ve gotten death threats, but I mean, I was… I was an evil character. I was mean. I can understand why people might, you know, maybe be angry anyway.”
Lash was quick to put things into perspective, telling Stephanie that kind of reaction was proof she had done her job better than almost anyone, saying, “You’re just great at your job. That’s all.” Stephanie laughed and couldn’t have agreed more, as she said, “That’s all.”
For years, Stephanie was the face of WWE’s authority figure era, constantly getting under fans’ skin whether she was running Raw, backing The Authority or verbally tearing into the company’s biggest stars. Looking back now, she can joke about it, but her comments just go to show how often wrestling fans blur the line between the character they see on television and the person playing it.
