Pat McAfee has spent years talking into microphones, calling football games and cutting wrestling promos. Now he’s picking up a different one.
The former WWE commentator took to Twitter and surprised fans by announcing that his debut album, The Diary of a Polarizing Figure, will be released on August 14, describing it as something he’s been working on for nearly two decades.
McAfee didn’t pitch the project as a celebrity trying music for fun. Instead, he said the songs were born out of years of dealing with criticism, headlines and public perception, explaining that the album is his chance to finally tell his side of the story.
“For as long as I can remember my mere existence has made people hate my guts… I’ve been writing songs about it for 20yrs & it’s time to let them aht.. A LOT of headlines & narratives.. if I was to die, I’d like my kids to know exactly who their dad is.”
It’s a surprisingly personal message from someone who’s built a career by being loud, opinionated and unapologetically himself. Instead of leaning into that public persona, McAfee suggested the album is about everything people haven’t seen behind it.
The announcement comes at a time when almost every part of McAfee’s career seems to be growing at once. Last month, we had reported that ESPN is negotiating a new contract with McAfee that could pay him between $60 million and $65 million per year, nearly doubling the value of his current deal while potentially giving him an even larger role across the network’s NFL coverage.
At the same time, he’s also closed the door on another chapter of his career. Following WrestleMania 42, McAfee admitted he feels he’s done everything he ever wanted to accomplish in professional wrestling. After wrestling, commentating, refereeing and even managing in WWE, he said there was nothing left for him to prove.
“For me, I finished my story… It’s been a hell of a run. Thank you, wrestling… The wrestling business is now in the rearview mirror.”
Whether it’s building one of the biggest sports shows in America, negotiating what could become one of ESPN’s richest talent deals or now releasing a deeply personal album, McAfee doesn’t appear interested in slowing down. If anything, he’s expanding into places very few expected.
