AEW fans hoping to see Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods walk through the curtain at Redemption may want to pump the brakes.
Fightful Select reports that The New Day is still expected to join AEW, but the duo is not planned for tonight’s pay-per-view in Montreal. There is also one major issue holding everything up—their WWE deals are not technically finished yet.
“We do expect New Day to join the company, but we were told they are not planned for tonight’s Redemption show, and that their WWE deals aren’t technically up yet.”
That shuts down the idea of a surprise Redemption debut, at least for now. Kingston and Woods have been heavily linked to AEW since leaving WWE, and the expectation inside the wrestling world remains that they will eventually land in Tony Khan’s company. The question is no longer whether AEW wants them. It is when they are legally free to show up.
Creative discussions are already said to be happening behind the scenes. During a Self Made session, Self Made Pro claimed AEW has been discussing how to use the former WWE Tag Team Champions once they become available. He then made it clear that Kingston and Woods are already part of those conversations.
“I do know that there have been a lot of pitches for the incoming teams and how to implement them.”
“What I know for a fact is that The New Day, in particular, are not only expected to come to AEW, but there have already been creative discussions as to what to do with them once they get to AEW. That’s something I can tell you for certain.”
Kingston and Woods did not leave WWE because their contracts simply expired. The pair turned down TKO’s proposed contract restructuring and were granted their releases, but the latest update indicates there is still time remaining before they can legally appear somewhere else.
That means fans can forget about The New Day crashing AEW Redemption tonight. The expected move is still alive, but the countdown cannot truly begin until their WWE agreements are officially over.
