MJF’s knee injury is real, but it does not sound like it is changing his Forbidden Door plans.
The AEW World Champion suffered a hyperextended knee during his match against RUSH on the June 3 episode of AEW Dynamite. The injury already forced MJF to pull out of Beyond Wrestling’s June 5 event in Cranston, Rhode Island, where he was scheduled to face Bobby Orlando.
Beyond Wrestling announced that MJF was not medically cleared to travel or compete after the injury, which immediately raised questions about his AEW status.
Now there is a stronger update on where things stand. Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that MJF’s knee is swollen and causing him pain, but whatever AEW has planned for him at Forbidden Door is still moving forward.
“MJF suffered a hyperextended knee in his match with Rush on the 6/3 Dynamite show. The knee is swollen and in pain but whatever is planned for the PPV (and it’s not clear at this point what that is) is not in jeopardy; essentially, the line was he is 1 million percent doing what is scheduled for San Jose.”
That is a major update after fans saw MJF go through a brutal No Countout Match with RUSH on Dynamite. MJF retained the AEW World Championship after locking in a crossface and making RUSH pass out, but he clearly did not leave the match at 100%.
Bryan Alvarez of F4WOnline.com also noted that the injury is legitimate, though the hope was that it would not be serious. Meltzer’s update now makes it clear that AEW is still expecting MJF to do what is planned for Forbidden Door.
MJF may be banged up, but the word right now is that his knee will not keep him out of San Jose. That is good news for AEW, especially with Forbidden Door bringing together AEW, NJPW, CMLL, and STARDOM talent for one of the company’s biggest crossover events of the year.
MJF’s injury will still be worth watching, but for now, his Forbidden Door status appears safe. He may be dealing with swelling and pain, but AEW’s World Champion is still expected to be part of the show.
