MJF’s time as the face of AEW’s biggest upcoming international event appears to be over.
After losing the AEW World Championship to Kenny Omega, AEW has quietly updated the promotional poster for Grand Slam: Mexico, replacing MJF with the company’s new world champion. The revised artwork, released on July 22, now features Omega front and center ahead of AEW Grand Slam: Mexico on August 5—a show that takes place before All In at Wembley Stadium.
The change comes less than two weeks after Omega defeated MJF on Dynamite to capture the AEW World Championship, ending MJF’s third reign in a match that was originally expected to headline the Redemption pay-per-view before being moved to television. While promotional artwork changing after a title switch isn’t unusual, the timing is particularly interesting given the recent reports surrounding MJF’s immediate future.
It was previously reported that MJF is expected to take time away from AEW television following his championship loss. Although no absence has been officially confirmed and no timetable has been revealed, there is still an expectation MJF will be involved with All In in some capacity.
With Grand Slam: Mexico taking place before Wembley, MJF’s removal from the event’s key promotional material is only likely to fuel more speculation that AEW is shifting its focus fully onto Omega as the face of the company heading into one of its biggest stretches of the year.
Whether MJF is genuinely taking time away or simply being kept off television until the road to All In heats up remains to be seen. But one thing is already clear: the champion on AEW’s biggest posters has changed—and so has the company’s direction heading into August.
