The man formerly known as Mike Santana has revealed the meaning behind his new WWE name, Cruz Montana, and it is tied directly to the father he lost six years ago.

Santana explained on Twitter that the name was created as a tribute to his late father, whose memory has remained close to him throughout every stage of his wrestling career.

“Cruz Montana. A name I put together as a tribute to honor my late father, who I’ve always made sure to keep as close as possible to my journey.”

He also admitted that his father’s death sent him into a downward spiral before he eventually fought his way back and rebuilt his life. Santana closed the message by making it clear that Cruz Montana represents a fresh start rather than a simple name change.

“Losing him six years ago is what sent me on the spiral that I’d eventually rise from to become the man you see today. And today, that man is addicted to greatness.”

“Here’s to this next chapter. Let’s get it!”

WWE filed a trademark for “Cruz Montana” on July 24, covering professional wrestling performances, television appearances and other entertainment services. Days later, Santana appeared after Tony D’Angelo’s NXT Championship defense against Naraku without being identified under his former name. He later confirmed that the new character would speak on the next episode of NXT.

“For the first time, you get to hear what Cruz Montana has to say.”

Cruz Montana is not just a WWE rebrand. For Santana, the name carries his father’s memory, the pain that nearly broke him and the comeback that brought him to this point.
