Mason Rook knows exactly what people say about his size. The new No. 1 contender to the NXT Championship admits he’d like to lose a few pounds one day, but he isn’t about to throw away the look that got him to WWE in the first place.
Fresh off earning an NXT Championship opportunity against Grayson Waller, Rook appeared on Busted Open Radio, where Bully Ray asked whether seeing someone like Bronson Reed slim down had ever made him think about changing his own physique.
Rather than giving a simple yes or no, Rook explained that every wrestler’s journey is different. He acknowledged he’d like to be in better shape, but also believes his size and appearance are a big part of what made him stand out in the first place.
“So I think it’s all individual, specific to the person. However, obviously my size, my look, and my uniqueness are what got me to the dance. But now that I got to the dance, I don’t know if that is enough to keep me in the dance.”
Rook admitted he’s watched plenty of wrestlers arrive in NXT with one look before completely changing their bodies once they reached WWE. Even so, he doesn’t believe there’s one formula that works for everyone.
“I see Superstars who arrived in NXT or WWE a certain way. They arrive here, and then they have a transition period. But again, everyone is different.”
That doesn’t mean he’s against improving himself. Rook openly admitted he’d like to trim down, but he also isn’t pretending the answer is simply becoming another wrestler with the same look as everyone else.
“Would I like to say I’d like to lose a few pounds? Of course. I’m not in denial about that. But again, my uniqueness and my style are what got me here, and I’d like to say that’s what will keep me here too.”
It’s an interesting mindset considering where Rook currently finds himself. After winning a Triple Threat Match on NXT, he’s now set to challenge Grayson Waller for the NXT Championship, making this the biggest opportunity of his WWE career so far.
Rook isn’t ruling out making changes down the road, but he’s also not convinced changing his body is the key to becoming a champion. Right now, he’d rather bet on the same size, style and uniqueness that earned him an NXT Championship match in the first place.
Do you think Mason Rook should keep the look that got him to WWE, or would slimming down help him reach the next level? Let us know in the comments.
