AEW fans expecting to see Kazuchika Okada challenge Darby Allin for the AEW World Championship are going to have to wait, because the match has officially been scrapped due to a legitimate personal situation.

During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer addressed the sudden change after AEW announced on Collision that Okada had returned to Japan for “family business.” While some fans immediately questioned whether it was part of a storyline angle, Meltzer made it clear the situation is very real.

“This was not an angle. He did legitimately have to go back to Japan for some family business. And so this was a legitimate change. So that match is off.”

The canceled match was expected to see Okada challenge Darby Allin for the AEW World Championship before AEW moves deeper into the company’s developing program involving MJF.

Bryan Alvarez also discussed how the change likely alters AEW’s immediate plans moving forward, especially with MJF waiting in the wings for a future title match. Meltzer agreed that once the company shifts fully into that storyline, it wouldn’t make much sense to continue booking additional title defenses for Darby beforehand.

Instead of facing Okada, Darby Allin is now set to defend the championship against Konosuke Takeshita. The change happened quickly on AEW programming, but Meltzer’s comments shut down speculation about injuries or storyline manipulation almost immediately.

The timing is unfortunate for fans who were hoping to finally see Darby Allin and Kazuchika Okada collide in a singles match, especially with Darby currently in the middle of one of the most dangerous and chaotic title runs of his career.
