Cody Rhodes isn’t closing the book on The Rock just yet, but he’s also not promising fans they’re getting the ending they want.

While speaking to Ariel Helwani, Cody was asked if he still needs to “finish the story” with The Rock. Cody didn’t give a hard yes, but he made it pretty clear there is still something unresolved between him and The Final Boss.

“Hmm. Dwayne Johnson has become a bit of a fixture in my career and in my life. Not just for his flag-in-the-sand moment that was WrestleMania and the emergence of one of the better characters that we only saw a little of — The Final Boss.”

That alone says plenty. The Rock’s Final Boss run didn’t last long, but it clearly left a mark on Cody’s career. Their WrestleMania connection still hangs over WWE, even with Rock away from television. Cody said he doesn’t want to guarantee that the story has to be settled, but he also admitted it feels unfinished.

“I don’t want to give it an absolute that we have to settle that, but I think it’s an unfinished story, which probably means there are two unfinished stories out there, and they don’t always get finished.”

That’s the part that will get fans talking. Cody knows there’s unfinished business with The Rock, but he also knows wrestling doesn’t always give fans the clean ending they fantasy book online. Then Cody explained there are two versions of how this could play out. One version isn’t even about a match. It’s about following The Rock’s path into TV and Hollywood and proving he can succeed there too.

“In wrestling, there is a lot of fantasy booking, but there’s a lot that goes into it. There’s a version of this story where finishing the story for me is trying to be as successful as I can be following his lead, breaking into TV and Hollywood that he thought only he could do, and doing that to honor him.”

But Cody Rhodes also knows what wrestling fans want. They want The Final Boss back on WWE television, and they want more than a story that just fades away with no real ending.

“But then there’s a version of it that’s appealing to a wrestling fan — that The Final Boss shows up and there’s more on the table than a non-ending. So I can’t answer that, Ariel.”

Cody also sounded a little tired of the constant teasing around The Rock’s possible WWE appearances. He said wrestlers don’t get too excited when people hint that Rock might show up or leak something misleading, because the current roster is the one carrying the company every week.

“I can say, as wrestlers, we get a little trepidatious, or we won’t get excited, when people tease he might be there, leak it, or drop something that’s misleading because we are trying to pull this wagon. You know me, I love nostalgia, but it’s got to be current and active, and right now we need active.”

The Rock has been away from WWE television since Elimination Chamber 2025, and Cody previously said fans should let him focus on his movie work instead of rushing him back. Still, this comment shows Cody knows there is a real story left on the table if The Final Boss ever returns.

For now, Cody Rhodes isn’t guaranteeing a match with The Rock, but he isn’t pretending the issue is settled either. The Final Boss may be gone from WWE TV right now, but his shadow is still hanging over Cody’s story.
