Kay Lee Ray is already looking ahead after her WWE exit, and she has plenty of fresh opponents in mind.
While speaking to Busted Open Radio, Kay Lee Ray was asked if there was a specific company she wanted to work for now that she is no longer under WWE contract. Instead of naming one promotion, she explained that she wants to enjoy her freedom after being locked down for years.
“So the thing is, I think there’s so many companies out there now that do let you do that. But like I said, I’ve been under contracts for seven, eight years with WWE. I was with WOS for a year before that. So I’ve kind of been locked down for a long time. And it’s actually been fun seeing this, speaking to promoters, seeing where we can go, see where in the world this can take me and wrestling these places again. I’m going to be working in at least soon, and that’ll be the first time for me. And that’s crazy. But yeah, just excited to kind of see what we can do for now before we’re thinking about locking down in any companies or contracts.”
Dave LaGreca then asked her to fantasy book herself and name dream opponents now that she has that freedom. Kay Lee Ray said there are many first-time matchups she wants, naming Willow Nightingale and Mercedes Moné as two major opponents she has never crossed paths with.
“Again, there’s so many and not just dream opponents, but like first-time opponents to me, but some that come off the top of my head. Willow, Mercedes, like all people that I’ve just never even crossed paths with, that I just can’t wait to get in there and just see what story we can be, what magic we can make happen.”
Bully Ray quickly noticed the pattern and pointed out that those were a lot of AEW names: “That’s a lot of AEW names.” Kay Lee Ray didn’t deny it. She explained that AEW launched while she was with WWE, meaning a lot of women on that roster are people she never got the chance to work with. She also brought up Japan, specifically Starlight Kid, and said facing her now would be incredible.
“It was. Well, we’ll never know. Again, people that AEW started when I was with WWE. So again, a lot of the girls that are coming through there I’ve never even crossed paths with. And again, those girls in Japan who were, they were not babies, but they were babies to me when I was there, like Starlight Kid and stuff. Imagine getting in the ring with her now. Like, it would just be amazing. It really would do. So yeah, just excited to see what the future can bring.”
This comes after Kay Lee Ray clarified that she was not released by WWE in the traditional sense. Her contract simply expired, which meant she did not have a 90-day non-compete clause and was able to return to the independent scene right away.
For now, Kay Lee Ray does not sound eager to sign another long-term deal immediately. After years with WWE and WOS, she wants to work different places, speak with promoters, and see where wrestling takes her next. And with names like Willow, Mercedes, and Starlight Kid already on her mind, her post-WWE run could get very interesting very quickly.
