Jonathan Coachman thinks he could slide right back into WWE television tomorrow — and according to him, he’d immediately be better than what fans are currently getting from Nick Aldis on SmackDown.
While speaking on the Coach and Bro Show alongside Vince Russo, Coachman reacted after a fan suggested he should replace Aldis as WWE’s on-screen authority figure for the blue brand. Instead of brushing the idea aside, Coachman openly admitted he believes he would thrive in the role.
“I don’t think that—I’m probably persona non grata, but I don’t know why. They’re giving us the stuff to react to—they are. So I don’t know why they would be mad at me. But I’m a great GM. I’m never going to sit here and act like I wouldn’t be good at it.”
Coachman then took things even further by claiming he could immediately recreate his old WWE character and outperform the current presentation almost instantly.
“I told Tony I’d be good at it. I would tell WWE—I’m really good at this, which is why I do it for a living. I could walk out there tomorrow and recreate the Coach character, and it would be better than what they’re doing right now—tomorrow.”
Vince Russo backed Jonathan Coachman up, arguing that WWE’s current authority figures don’t feel powerful enough: “Because the authority figures have no authority.”
The comments come at an interesting time because Aldis has quietly become one of WWE’s more heavily featured non-wrestling personalities over the past few years. Since stepping into the SmackDown GM role, Aldis has regularly been positioned as the show’s main authority figure during major storyline developments involving stars like Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, and GUNTHER.
Bottom line: Jonathan Coachman doesn’t just think he could return to WWE television — he believes he could immediately outperform Nick Aldis as SmackDown GM, while Vince Russo argues WWE’s authority figures no longer feel authoritative at all.
