John Cena is giving fans a better idea of what he wants the John Cena Classic to become, and it sounds like WWE’s version of an All-Star showcase.

While speaking to US Weekly, John Cena admitted the concept is still being worked on. However, he said his main goal is to create a night of exhibition matches where WWE and NXT talent can share the limelight.

“It’s still a work in progress. What I want to see is a night of exhibition matches. I always try to say to young talent, ‘Tell me who you are in one sentence.’ The John Cena Classic is WWE’s All Star game. That’s the sentence, and then we branch out from that.”

Cena then explained that he envisions WWE Superstars and NXT stars either teaming together or facing each other, depending on how the final format comes together. He also said he likes the idea of personally inviting talent so they understand how much the event means to him.

“I envision a world … where it’s exhibition matches, WWE superstars competing with NXT superstars. … Maybe they’re on the same team, maybe they face off at each other. … I think the bracketology is interesting. I love a world where I personally invite the talent to participate so they know how much it means to me. That means more trips to Raw, more trips to SmackDown, more trips to NXT. We have reveals of all this stuff.”

Cena also revealed that the tournament would include a new championship. He said he wants both the audience and the wrestlers involved to see the title before the event, along with a card reveal showing the matchups.

“We tell everybody where it is when it is. … We’re going to debut a new championship. So I’d love the audience to see that. I’d love the participants to see that before. I’d love to do a card reveal where you realize the event, and these are the matchups.”

One of Cena’s biggest concerns is the fan-voting system. He said he wants real audience participation, but he does not want the vote to be hijacked by bots or burner accounts.

“We’ve got to figure out the fan vote. I do not want it sabotaged. I do not want it hijacked. I know there’s a lot of burner accounts out there and there’s a lot of bots out there. Audience participation is what I want, like fair audience participation, because I’m the success story.”

Cena then connected the entire idea back to his own WWE journey. He reminded fans that he was once viewed as the last pick, was nearly fired, and had to win people over slowly through smaller shows and live events before becoming one of WWE’s biggest names.

“I’m trying to encompass my journey in an evening. I was the WWE last pick. I was going to be fired. I was given a second chance, and not a main-event second chance. I started on the minor league shows. I started on the weekend shows, live events, winning over one fan at a time.”

Cena said the John Cena Classic is meant to give talent a chance to introduce themselves in a big way. Whether someone is a rising name or already a champion, the event would give them a platform to prove why fans should remember them.

“This is a night where you can put down your business card and say you’re going to remember this name, and if you’re already a champ and you participate in the event, you can say that’s why I am. It’s truly just an exhibition of our best and brightest of today and tomorrow, and you never know what’s going to happen.”

Cena had previously defended the fan-voting idea by saying wins and losses still matter, but the format also allows fans to reward standout performances. This new update gives the concept more shape, with Cena pitching it as a special attraction built around opportunity, exposure, and audience involvement.

The John Cena Classic still isn’t finalized, but Cena clearly has a big vision for it. He wants a new championship, WWE and NXT involvement, fan voting that actually feels fair, and a stage where someone can have the kind of breakout night that changes their career.
