Joe Gacy isn’t closing the door on AEW following his WWE release. He just isn’t interested in sitting around waiting for the call.
While speaking with Wombreezy, the former Wyatt Sicks member was asked whether he sees himself joining AEW now that he’s a free agent. Rather than teasing Tony Khan’s company as his next destination, Gacy revealed his focus has been getting back into the ring immediately instead of putting his career on hold while waiting for a major promotion to come calling.
“Well, I mean, I knew I wanted to get back out there as quick as I could. So, I didn’t really want to wait for anything as far as like any major companies. Like I didn’t want to wait to go to a major company.”
That doesn’t mean Gacy has ruled out signing with another major company. In fact, he admitted that’s still exactly where he hopes to end up. The difference is that he isn’t targeting one promotion over another and is keeping every option open.
“Ultimately I do want to make my way to another major company. Hopefully. I don’t really have my eyes set on any specific company. I’m pretty open to being anywhere.”
Until that opportunity comes along, Gacy says returning to the independent wrestling scene has reminded him what he missed most during his time in WWE. While he praised WWE crowds, he admitted there’s something different about performing in front of smaller, more intimate audiences.
“I’m enjoying being on these independent shows in front of the crowds I’ve been in front of. They’re amazing. I think that was the one piece that I was missing a little bit. WWE crowds are amazing… but I think something about the intimacy of an independent wrestling crowd is something that I was missing that I didn’t get when I was with WWE.”
As much as he’s enjoying that experience, Gacy made it clear it isn’t the finish line. He’s still aiming to work for another nationally televised wrestling company.
“The ultimate goal is to keep getting anywhere I can and then maybe landing in another major company somewhere.”
Since becoming a free agent following WWE’s release of the Wyatt Sicks earlier this year, Gacy has wasted little time rebuilding his career instead of waiting for the perfect offer. Whether that eventually leads him to AEW or somewhere else remains to be seen, but for now, he’s choosing to stay active rather than gamble on one phone call changing everything.
