Jim Ross took another frightening hit just days after brain surgery—and this one happened inside his own bedroom. The WWE Hall of Famer revealed that he lost his balance, crashed into a bench and hit it hard enough to rip out the screws.
During Grilling JR, Ross said he is slowly recovering from the procedure but continues to fight through serious balance problems. He then revealed that he had suffered another fall only two nights before recording the podcast.
“I’m doing pretty good. Healing slowly but surely, but I’m just fighting through it. I fell two nights ago in my bedroom, and I fell into my bench.”
The bench had been placed at the end of the bed by Ross’ late wife, Jan, so her cat could climb onto the mattress. Ross slammed into it so hard that the entire thing broke beneath him.
“Jan bought a little bench that she sat at the end of our bed so that her cat could get in the bed easier, and it’s still there. But when I fell, I broke the son of a bitch and crashed and burned.”
Ross had the bench repaired instead of throwing it away because of its sentimental value, but the fall did him no favors as he tries to recover from surgery. Ross said he can move around reasonably well when he slows down and stays focused. The trouble starts when he tries to turn or move too quickly, forcing him to rely on a walker inside his own home.
“My handyman came over and repaired it, so now it’s solid. That didn’t do me any favors. This falling shit, man—I’ve got to take my time and not get in any big hurry, especially when I change direction.”
“If I take my time and don’t get in any big hurry, especially when I change direction, I do pretty good. If I don’t take my time, I go right back to that walker. Using a walker in your own home is humbling. It’s humbling.”
Conrad Thompson later joked about how Ross really destroyed the bench, but JR shut that down and explained just how violent the fall felt. For a moment, he believed the cracking sound came from his own ribs.
“I haven’t done any trick stuff in a while. I don’t remember the last time, to be honest with you. But no, I fell. I busted my ass. I heard some cracking. I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’ve broken some ribs,’ but it was the bench that broke. I broke screws out of it, and I hit it hard.”
Ross admitted that falling has become one of his biggest enemies. He knows that trying to rush through ordinary movements could send him crashing down again.
“That’s been one of my big enemies—falling. I’ve just got to be careful. I get in too big a hurry to do shit, man. I just have to be more careful and more deliberate.”
The fall came while Ross was recovering from surgery to install a shunt that drains excess fluid from his brain into his stomach. The fluid had been causing headaches, memory trouble and equilibrium problems, and Ross said he has not yet experienced the level of improvement he hoped to feel after the operation.
Those same balance problems also helped kill his plan to travel to London for AEW All In. His doctors warned that another fall during the flight or in England could create a medical emergency, forcing him to stay home and continue recovering.
Ross escaped this fall without revealing any broken bones, but smashing a heavy bench hard enough to tear out its screws shows just how serious his balance problems remain. JR wants to get back behind the commentary desk, but right now, safely walking through his own home is still part of the fight.
