Jim Cornette is not buying Ronda Rousey’s quick MMA comeback win over Gina Carano — and he made that crystal clear with a brutal tweet mocking the entire fight as fake.
After Rousey submitted Carano with an armbar at MVP MMA 1, Cornette took to Twitter and mocked the fight, making it clear he believes the whole thing looked staged. Cornette wrote a fake conversation between Rousey and Carano, joking that they had already secured the money before the fight even started.
“OK, Gina, we’ve got their money. We’ll make 4 million dollars per second. As soon as I get the arm, tap like Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson and we’ll be hugging and kissing five times as long as the ‘fight’ lasted before the suckers can feel for their wallets.”
That was Cornette’s way of saying he thought the finish looked too easy and too convenient. Rousey took the fight to the mat almost immediately and forced Carano to tap in just 16 seconds, which instantly led to online debate about how real the comeback fight looked.
The criticism also comes after MMA Junkie reported the disclosed purses for the event. Rousey earned $2.2 million, while Carano received $1.05 million, according to figures released by the California State Athletic Commission. Those numbers do not include any possible bonuses, Netflix-related incentives, or additional money tied to ticket sales and viewership, so the final payout could be higher.
Rousey’s quick win was promoted as a dominant return to MMA, but Cornette is clearly viewing it through a much more skeptical lens. To him, the 16-second finish looked less like a competitive fight and more like an easy cash grab. For now, Rousey has not responded to Cornette’s comments. But after such a fast finish and such a massive payday, the debate around the fight is clearly not slowing down.
