Tony Khan apparently wasn’t the reason Adam Copeland missed John Cena’s farewell tour. If WWE had actually called about bringing Copeland back for one last moment with Cena, Khan says he would have listened.
While speaking to Metro UK, Khan was asked about Adam Copeland recently saying he believed the AEW President would have allowed him to return to WWE for Cena’s farewell tour. Khan didn’t disagree.
“I was never asked, and as far as I know, Adam was never asked, so it’s hard to say. But when there have been opportunities to collaborate, I have been collaborative in the past.”
However, Tony Khan didn’t leave it at some vague “maybe.” If WWE had actually come to him with dates and a plan for Copeland, he says he would have supported it.
“I never got asked, but if I had been presented a plan and the dates and the information of what was going on, yeah, I would have supported it.”
The AEW President also made it clear he wouldn’t have tried to blow up the deal if both companies had managed to work something out. The problem is nobody ever got that far.
“I would not have undermined” an arrangement if both sides had “been able to talk and work something out. But nobody ever asked us or me.”
That’s pretty much what Copeland suspected all along. He recently told Ariel Helwani that he believed Khan would have been completely fine with the idea, but he never approached him because he already knew how WWE tends to look at these situations.
“I never pursued it. Having been there long enough and kind of knowing how the mindset is there, I realized it ain’t gonna happen. If it were up to me and John? Sure.”
Copeland and Cena ended up never getting that final match, despite their rivalry being such a huge part of both men’s careers. The interesting part now is that the AEW side apparently wasn’t the wall standing in the way—WWE simply never came knocking.
