Bootleg Kev is giving new insight into Jelly Roll’s WrestleMania 42 involvement, claiming the country star was aware he was being pushed into a storyline that may not have been the right fit.
While speaking on his YouTube channel, Bootleg Kev said he is very close with Jelly Roll and revealed that the singer wanted a different WWE storyline instead of being placed in the WrestleMania main event picture.
“I’m pretty comfortable in saying this—Jelly wanted his story. I’m really, really close to Jelly Roll. He was very self-aware that he was being pushed into a storyline that he probably didn’t need to be pushed into.”
According to Kev, Jelly Roll was interested in being part of a storyline that was more comedic and still playing out on WWE television. Kev said Jelly Roll even pitched the idea directly and believed it would work if WWE gave him the chance.
“He was being very vocal about wanting to be involved in a storyline that is still playing out currently that was more comedic. He was like, ‘Guys, if you put me into this thing, I promise you it will cook.’”
Kev also claimed he was present at WWE SmackDown in Phoenix and personally heard Jelly Roll having those conversations with people in WWE before the company moved forward with its own plans.
“I was there at WWE SmackDown in Phoenix, and I heard him having these conversations with certain people in WWE, and they still decided to.”
Even with those concerns, Kev said Jelly Roll was not going to turn down a WrestleMania main event spot once WWE put it in front of him.
“And hey, if you’re him, you’re like, ‘Hey man, if you’re gonna push me into the main event of WrestleMania, I won’t say no, but I don’t think people are gonna like it.’”
Jelly Roll ended up playing a major role in the WrestleMania 42 main event involving Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton. During the chaos, he delivered a splash that sent Pat McAfee crashing through the announce table, a spot that later left McAfee dealing with physical issues.
After the match, Jelly Roll addressed McAfee directly in a message shared on his YouTube vlog. He admitted that both of them probably had no business being involved in that situation.
“I had one goal tonight and I kind of succeeded. Pat, I love you man, neither one of us had any business here.”
Jelly Roll then encouraged McAfee to return to what he does best while joking about his own future after stepping into the WWE spotlight.
“I say we get back to what we’re good at man, even though I’m not actually really good at anything. But, you’re great at something so go do it. I’ll keep searching for what I’m going to do when I grow up.”
McAfee has since said he is completely out of the wrestling business after detailing the toll WrestleMania 42 took on him. Now, Bootleg Kev’s comments suggest Jelly Roll may have had his own reservations before the storyline ever reached WWE’s biggest stage.
For now, the update paints the WrestleMania 42 celebrity involvement in a different light. Jelly Roll still went through with the role, but according to Kev, he had pushed for a different creative direction before WWE placed him in the main event scene.
What do you think about Bootleg Kev claiming Jelly Roll wanted a different WWE storyline before WrestleMania 42? Should WWE have used him in a more comedic role instead? Let us know your thoughts and leave your feedback in the comments.
