The fallout from CM Punk’s WrestleMania 42 weekend incident isn’t dying down — but now WWE Hall of Famer JBL is stepping in on his side.
After footage surfaced showing Punk knocking a fan’s phone out of their hand at the MGM Grand while the person was filming near AJ Lee and Bayley, the moment quickly led to debate online. The fan involved has since said he won’t pursue legal action and only wants an apology — but not everyone thinks Punk did anything wrong.
Speaking on Something To Wrestle on April 24, 2026, JBL was asked directly about the situation — and he made it clear where he stands. Before giving his take, JBL framed the moment around what he believes Punk was actually reacting to — someone filming in close proximity to his wife in a crowded setting.
“I don’t blame him. That’s his wife, and I don’t blame him one at all. He’s taking care of his wife. He’s protecting her, and I think I would have done probably the same thing, right or wrong.”
He then addressed the bigger question of whether Punk’s actions crossed a legal or ethical line, making it clear he doesn’t see the situation as serious enough to escalate. JBL also downplayed the physical aspect of the incident, suggesting that the reaction to it may be bigger than the moment itself.
“I have no idea if it’s right or wrong. I don’t know what the laws are regarding it. I don’t think it was an invasion of privacy, and if somebody asked him not to do it, he should have stopped. And getting the phone slapped out of your hand, that’s not a big deal. So what, you know, hey, you have a story the rest of your life to tell about it.”
He closed by doubling down on his stance, making it clear he doesn’t fault Punk for how he handled the situation.
“But I don’t think it’s a big deal, and I don’t blame CM Punk for doing that.”
With no legal action expected and a WWE Hall of Famer now publicly backing Punk, the situation has shifted from potential controversy to a debate over boundaries — especially when it comes to fans approaching talent in personal spaces.
The ball is still in Punk’s court on whether he responds to the fan’s request for an apology — but at least from JBL’s perspective, there may not be anything to apologize for.
