WWE wasted absolutely no time with Ilja Dragunov. Immediately after his reported exit, he’s already been moved to the Alumni section of WWE’s website.
According to PWInsider on August 20, Dragunov is exiting WWE after his contract expired.
“Ilja Dragonuv is exiting World Wrestling Entertainment, PWInsider.com can exclusively confirm. We are told that Dragonuv’s deal has expired.”
The Alumni move makes everything feel considerably more final, especially considering there was never a farewell match or even a television sendoff for Dragunov. He wrestled during WrestleMania weekend and then simply disappeared.
That disappearance became increasingly strange as the months went by. Dragunov wasn’t announced as injured, and he had even been publicly training at the Hart Dungeon while remaining nowhere to be found on WWE television.
Just before news of his departure broke, WrestleVotes painted a pretty bleak picture of his standing behind the scenes. JoeyVotes admitted he hadn’t heard Dragunov’s name being discussed in weeks.
“I haven’t heard his name in weeks.”
TC pointed toward WWE’s reported “Moneyball” approach and reliance on analytics when determining which talent gets television time.
“Analytics, man. They rely on analytics so much. And if these numbers look bad against you and not in your favor, they won’t use you as much. Some of these guys are feeling the effects of WWE’s new Moneyball approach, where they take numbers, analytics, and reporting.”
JoeyVotes was even more direct about Dragunov specifically.
“His merch is nothing. He’s had one or two shirts, so there’s no, ‘Man, I really like this guy. I’ll buy his T-shirt.’ He’s not a priority. We can say that.”
Now WWE has already moved on at the website level too. Dragunov went from months of radio silence to having his contract expire, and within hours his profile was sitting in the Alumni section.
That’s a pretty abrupt ending for someone who once looked capable of becoming a major part of WWE’s future. No farewell match, no television goodbye — just WrestleMania weekend, months of silence and then straight to Alumni. The question isn’t when Dragunov returns anymore. It’s where he shows up next.
