Shawn Michaels didn’t originally plan for Sweet Chin Music to become one of the most famous finishing moves in wrestling — and according to him, a simple suggestion from Pat Patterson changed everything.

During his appearance on the Club 520 Podcast, Michaels reflected on the origins of his signature superkick and revealed how the move slowly evolved into the weapon fans recognize today. He explained that the inspiration came from watching World Class Wrestling, where another performer introduced him to the superkick concept.

“So that — I was watching World Class Wrestling and a guy by the name of Gentleman Chris Adams, he did the super kick. And I just — that was a move that I didn't see a lot of people do… and I just thought that's a really cool move.”

At first, Michaels used the kick only as a setup move while finishing opponents with something else. But that changed after Patterson offered a piece of advice that reshaped Michaels’ career.

“And then eventually Pat Patterson came to me. He was like, ‘Don't you just do the kick? It's better.’ And I thought, ‘Okay.’ And so I started doing that.”

Michaels added that many of his signature elements weren’t carefully planned — they developed naturally over time, including the famous stomping routine that became part of the Sweet Chin Music setup.

“Everything just for me in my career, things just sort of naturally happened… none of it was ever by plan… I was fortunate enough to come about most of this stuff organically.”

Today, Sweet Chin Music stands as one of the most recognizable finishing moves in wrestling history, proving that sometimes the simplest advice can lead to iconic results.
