Baron Corbin didn’t spend his time away from WWE trying to convince Triple H to give him another shot. In fact, Corbin says he deliberately never asked for his job back—and WWE eventually came looking for him instead.
While speaking on Busted Open Radio, Corbin finally revealed how his WWE comeback came together after the company decided not to renew his contract in November 2024. Despite spending 12 years there, Corbin wasn’t interested in begging his way back through the door.
“The coming back process was awesome because never once in the year and a half I was gone did I reach out. You saw that interview where Hunter said guys text him that they wanna come back. I never did that. If they want me back, they’ll call me. I won’t beg for a job.”
That doesn’t mean Corbin completely disappeared from Triple H’s life. The two remained in contact while Corbin was gone, but Corbin says those conversations stayed personal. He never tried turning one of those exchanges into a discussion about getting rehired.
“I had communicated throughout the time I was gone with Hunter, but it was never about work. It was like, ‘How’s the family? How are the girls?’ and a few other people there. But that line was never crossed, like, ‘Hey, what would you think about me coming back?’”
Eventually, WWE crossed that line themselves. Corbin revealed that the company first approached him about a potential return in December 2025. Nothing came from that initial conversation because Corbin wasn’t ready to give up what he was doing outside WWE just to immediately go back.
“Eventually they did reach out. We had a conversation in December that was very brief, and it didn’t go anywhere because it was like, ‘Hey, would you be interested in that?’”
Corbin had spent his time away rebuilding himself on the independent scene rather than waiting around for WWE. He wanted to travel, collect championships and improve in the ring, with stops in Mexico, Australia and Europe becoming part of that process. So when WWE first called, Corbin made it clear that any return would have to be worth giving that up.
“I was like, ‘I would be open to a conversation, but I’m doing things out here and building back the reputation behind the name, racking up wins and titles, and traveling around the world. I’m upping my game. I wrestled in Mexico, Australia, and Europe and leveled up my in-ring skills.’”
Things changed when WWE came back with something more concrete. The conversations became serious this year, and Corbin finally sat down with Triple H to hear what WWE actually wanted to do with him. Instead of bringing back another version of the character he had played before his release, the plan was to lean into what Corbin believes he does best.
“So when the conversation started, it was like, ‘Hey man, we’re actually interested in bringing you back.’ Then having a conversation with Hunter and what his plans were—taking me back for what I do best: beating people up.”
Triple H’s idea was apparently to restore some legitimacy to Corbin as a threat inside the ring. Corbin wanted people to believe that when he stepped into a match, he could genuinely hurt somebody and, more importantly, actually win.
“Bringing back legitimacy to when I step in the ring and I hurt people, and believably that I can win matches.”
That plan finally became reality on the July 10 episode of SmackDown, when Corbin returned and went after Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes. He has already gone on to win the United States Championship at SummerSlam and is now set to face Lil Yachty at Saturday Night’s Main Event this week.
Corbin could have used his relationship with Triple H to ask for another chance long before WWE called. Instead, he spent his time proving himself somewhere else until WWE came back with an idea he actually wanted. Considering he returned as a threat and already has championship gold around his waist, Corbin certainly didn’t come back just to pick up where he left off.
