WWE made another major announcement during this week’s episode of SmackDown as the road to SummerSlam continued to take shape. But first, they have Saturday Night’s Main Event at the end of the month.
Nick Aldis officially returned as SmackDown General Manager this week. He was reinstated following a period of forced administrative leave that stemmed from his backstage confrontation with GUNTHER several weeks ago.
GUNTHER had another backstage segment where he told Nick Aldis to make this situation right. After all, he wants a shot at SmackDown’s top title.
Later in the show, Nick Aldis announced that GUNTHER would team with Sami Zayn to face Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk and Cody Rhodes at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
The announcement came after Nick Aldis had already revealed earlier in the show that Sami Zayn was taking a “mental health break” and would not be appearing on SmackDown. Despite being absent, Zayn was still scheduled to compete in one of WWE’s biggest matches before SummerSlam.
The segment quickly broke down after the announcement. GUNTHER attacked Nick Aldis, picking up right where their backstage issues had left off before the General Manager’s suspension. Then GUNTHER locked on a choke hold and left Nick Aldis limp in the ring, despite a ton of WWE officials trying to pry him off.
Eventually, Cody Rhodes made his way to the ring to help GUNTHER out. However, the show cut off right as the American Nightmare made his way down for the save. Obviously, these sides have a lot of beef, and everyone wants to improve their momentum at this point.
It was also previously announced during the show that Paige and Brie Bella will have quite a match on their hands. Fatal Influence will take them on in tag team action. That will be a big match in the World’s Most Famous Arena.
The next WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event takes place on Saturday, July 18, 2026, streaming live from Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. Ringside News will have full coverage of the entire event.
