Ethan Page finally has the Intercontinental Championship around his waist, but apparently winning the damn thing wasn’t enough to silence everyone questioning him. If anything, Page thinks his success is exactly why people can’t stand him.
Speaking on WWE Now after defeating Chad Gable on the November 2 episode of RAW, Page was asked about the negative reaction surrounding his championship win. Megan Morant noted that the Barclays Center crowd appeared disappointed to see Gable lose before Sam Roberts asked Page whether he was surprised people were still doubting him.
“No, this will happen for the rest of my life.”
When Roberts asked why Page expected that reaction to follow him forever, the new champion had a pretty simple explanation.
“I don’t know. I think I just make people insecure.”
Roberts wasn’t completely buying that answer and questioned whether insecurity was really behind the criticism. Page didn’t back down.
“Yeah, a hundred percent. You can’t be happy for someone’s success? You suck.”
Things got even more heated when Roberts suggested that Page’s own attitude and apparent lack of humility might be part of the reason people react negatively to him. That opened the door for Page to explain just how much he believes he had to fight through to reach WWE.
“For who? The people watching me? A hundred percent, because they don’t understand the process of getting where I have to go. Look, everyone treats Chad Gable like he’s some American hero. My family immigrated to Canada, then I had to leave Canada to come to America to finally get into WWE to claim this. I didn’t start my career in WWE and then find my way through the system here. No, I have traveled the world and clawed to get here. So yes, I think the fans should have more humility for my life experience that I had to endure to get here and become champion.”
Roberts then clarified that he was actually questioning Page’s humility, not the fans’. Page somehow managed to turn that into another compliment for himself.
“I have incredible humility. What are you talking about? More in abundance, really, more than anyone in this entire company.”
Page eventually took things beyond wrestling and explained why he believes his confidence makes people uncomfortable. As far as the new Intercontinental Champion is concerned, he knows exactly who he is while plenty of other people don’t.
“I think you need to understand who you are. Really. A lot of people have been saying that everybody, everyone watching this, nobody understands who they are. I know who I am, and that makes you, and you, and everyone watching very, very, very uncomfortable.”
Page captured the Intercontinental Championship earlier that night after surviving a brutal fight with Gable. He eventually escaped another ankle lock, sent Gable into the turnbuckles and rolled through into an Egoplex to score the three-count.
Page certainly isn’t approaching his new championship reign like somebody looking for approval. If the boos keep coming, he seems perfectly happy to treat them as proof that he’s getting exactly the reaction he wants.
