AEW’s wild round steel cage at Forbidden Door had fans excited, and now Tony Khan is giving credit where it’s due.
During the AEW Forbidden Door post-show media scrum, Khan revealed that Mike Mansury was the one who suggested using a round steel cage for the 12-man war between Team Briscoe and Team DCMJF. Khan said he liked the idea right away, and judging by how the match played out, AEW may not be done with it.
“It was a very cool idea. It was Mike Mansury who asked about putting in a round steel cage. I thought it was a really cool concept, so it came out really good.”
That cage ended up being the perfect playground for complete madness. Team Briscoe and Team DCMJF tore each other apart with tables, thumbtacks, ladders, hockey equipment, orange slices, an NES console, and even a surprise Lio Rush appearance out of a hockey bag. Mark Briscoe eventually got the win for his team, meaning he earned an AEW World Championship match against MJF.
Tony Khan also revealed AEW had a name for the structure, calling it “Death’s Door” because it debuted at Forbidden Door and carried a much nastier vibe than a regular cage match.
“Being at Forbidden Door and being a deadly cage, we called it Death’s Door. It looks great, and I’d love to bring it back, so it was a very good debut for Death’s Door.”
So, this may not be a one-night stunt. Khan sounds happy with how the round cage looked and played on TV, which means “Death’s Door” could become another AEW gimmick match down the line if the right feud needs total chaos.
Forbidden Door already had plenty going on, but that cage gave the 12-man tag a different feel from the usual steel cage setup. Whether fans loved the insanity or thought it was too much, AEW clearly got people talking.
