CM Punk’s Instagram Story may have sent fans into a frenzy, but the apparent SummerSlam spoiler was nothing more than a production mistake. Despite commemorative chairs at the event labeling Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship match against Cody Rhodes as a Street Fight, WWE is not adding that stipulation.
According to PWInsider, people within WWE were asked about the graphic and made it clear the match will remain exactly as advertised.
“In asking around, it was said CM Punk vs. Cody Rhodes will not be a Street Fight, despite the commemorative chairs listing it as such.”
The confusion started when Punk posted a behind-the-scenes photo showing chairs prepared for SummerSlam. One of the chair graphics promoted his title defense against Rhodes but included the words “Street Fight,” even though WWE had never announced any special rules for the match.
That immediately raised questions about whether Punk had accidentally exposed a late creative change before the show. The tension between Punk and Rhodes has already been pushed hard, including a heated confrontation following their recent tag team match at a WWE live event, so a Street Fight would not have felt completely out of place.
The mistake still gave fans one final curveball before the show, but there will be no weapons, no relaxed rules and no Street Fight stipulation attached to Punk vs. Rhodes.
