CM Punk walked out of Saturday night’s NXT live event feeling damn good about the whole thing.
After unexpectedly wrestling in Petersburg, Virginia, the Undisputed WWE Champion hit his Instagram Stories to thank the crowd, the NXT office and the talent for letting him jump into the mix. Punk made it clear the night meant a lot more to him than just another WWE appearance.
“Thank you to all the fans who came out tonight. You were BEAUTS. Amazing energy. Thank you Petersburg, VA! Special thank you to all @wwenxt office and talent for allowing me to come work with you all. My heart is so full. I love this. I am so grateful and appreciative of everyone’s hard work. What a life!”
That reaction came after Punk gave the Petersburg crowd way more than WWE originally promised. The company had announced Punk for the August 15 NXT live event at the VSU Multipurpose Center, but never said he would actually wrestle. Then the main event hit.
Punk teamed with NXT Tag Team Champions Tavion Heights and Myles Borne against Vanity Project members Jackson Drake, Brad Baylor and Ricky Smokes. Punk’s team got the win after Drake was put through a table, and the night ended with several NXT babyfaces joining Punk and his partners in the ring for a big group celebration. So much for a quick CM Punk cameo.
Punk had only been announced for the Petersburg event and was not part of NXT’s live event in Salisbury, Maryland, one night earlier. WWE could have easily sent him out for a promo, a wave to the crowd and a trip back through the curtain. Instead, Punk got physical, worked the main event and helped close the show alongside some of NXT’s younger talent.
