CM Punk didn’t just show up at Saturday night’s NXT live event in Petersburg, Virginia — he got in the ring and wrestled.
WWE had previously announced that the Undisputed WWE Champion would appear at the August 15 show inside the VSU Multipurpose Center, but the company kept quiet about exactly what Punk would be doing. That mystery was solved in the main event.
Punk teamed with NXT Tag Team Champions Tavion Heights and Myles Borne in a six-man tag team match against Vanity Project members Jackson Drake, Brad Baylor and Ricky Smokes.
Punk’s team picked up the win after Drake was put through a table. A number of NXT babyfaces then joined Punk and his partners in the ring to pose for the crowd and close out the show.
The appearance gave the Petersburg crowd much more than a quick CM Punk cameo, with WWE putting its top champion directly into the NXT live event main event. Punk had only been advertised for the Petersburg event and was not part of NXT’s live event in Salisbury, Maryland, one night earlier.
