Chelsea Green spent years putting motherhood on hold because there was still one thing she needed to accomplish in WWE. Now that she’s finally become Women’s Champion, she says that feeling is gone.
While speaking on The Nikki & Brie Show, Green revealed that she and husband Matt Cardona had deliberately delayed starting a family because she couldn’t shake the feeling that she had one more WWE run left in her.
“Right. And I’m 35. Nikki, I’ve told you this. I want to start a family. I wanted to start a family years ago, and Matt and I decided, ‘No, let’s put that on pause because I think I need one more run with WWE.’”
Green didn’t want to walk away, have children and spend the rest of her life wondering what would’ve happened if she’d given wrestling one more shot. So they waited.
“I didn’t want to have any regrets. I didn’t want to be sitting at home with my children thinking, ‘What if? What if I had one more opportunity?’”
Now she doesn’t have to wonder. Green finally captured the Interim WWE Women’s Championship at SummerSlam, reaching the goal that had kept her chasing another run in the company. And apparently that moment changed considerably more than what championship she carries to the ring. For the first time, Green feels like she could close the wrestling chapter tomorrow and genuinely be okay with it.
“If I were to close the book that is WWE or that is professional wrestling or whatever it is, I would be so happy doing that today because of this moment.”
That doesn’t mean Green just announced her retirement. It does mean the question that kept her from moving toward motherhood no longer exists.
“Now I feel like if that happens next, I’m ready. I got to accomplish my dream. I don’t have any regrets anymore.”
The timing of those comments is particularly interesting considering Green is suddenly facing another major question about her immediate wrestling future. She suffered a broken orbital bone during SmackDown while teaming with Tiffany Stratton against Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid, sending her to the emergency room after the show. Green admitted afterwards that she doesn’t know what the injury means for her championship reign or how long she could be away.
But even before that injury complicated everything, Green had reached a very different place with wrestling. For years, starting a family came with a “what if?” After SummerSlam, it doesn’t anymore.
