Chelsea Green walked out of the September 11 edition of Friday Night SmackDown thinking she’d just had one of her best matches. Then she got online. The WWE Women’s Champion has finally addressed the backlash over her match with Nia Jax, admitting she couldn’t believe how differently people on the internet saw it compared to the fans inside the arena.
Speaking on NotSam Wrestling, Green reminded everyone that she wasn’t even 100 percent going into the match. She had broken her orbital bone, got cleared to wrestle anyway, and still walked away convinced she and Jax had delivered.
“I broke my orbital bone and then wrestled Nia. I thought I had a banger of a match, but the internet told me otherwise. One thing about them, they stay humbling me. For 13 years I can’t get a big head.”
The reaction online centered around the finish. Green attempted a top-rope sequence before transitioning into the Unprettier, but the landing didn’t come together cleanly. The clip spread quickly across social media, with plenty of fans focusing on the awkward ending instead of the rest of the match. Chelsea Green admitted that wasn’t easy to see, especially after the response she got in the building. She said the Mexico City crowd made her feel like she and Jax had knocked it out of the park.
“It feels real, especially when Mexico City tells you it was amazing and they are loud the whole time. You come back and feel like, ‘Yes! I entertained the shit out of them.’ Then you get a whole different opinion elsewhere. It’s very jarring.”
Instead of relying on thousands of strangers online, Green said she’d rather trust the people who know her and won’t sugarcoat anything. Jordynne Grace is one of those people.
“Look, my friends are also very real with me. Jordynne Grace is very, very real. She told me she liked the match, and that’s who I trust. Oh, she would tell me in depth if she didn’t like it.”
That experience also explains why Green isn’t on X anymore. She admitted constantly reading reactions after every match wasn’t doing her any favors.
“At the end of the day, you have to touch grass. That’s why I don’t have X anymore, or else I’d spiral.”
One awkward spot may have dominated the conversation online, but that’s not the match Green remembers. She remembers wrestling through a broken orbital bone, hearing thousands of fans in Mexico City on their feet, and walking backstage thinking she’d just had a banger.
