Charlotte Flair has dealt with criticism her entire career, but one comment in particular stuck with her during her early years in WWE.

While appearing on the No-Contest Wrestling podcast, Charlotte opened up about the backlash she received when she first arrived on the WWE scene. One of the most common remarks she heard from fans focused on her resemblance to her father, Ric Flair — something she admitted was difficult to handle at the time. She explained that coming from a sports background, appearance was never something she worried about until fans started picking her apart.

“It doesn’t bother me anymore, but what really bothered me early in my career was, ‘Why does she look like Ric Flair in a wig?’ And I’d be like, who am I supposed to look like? Am I supposed to look like Dusty? Like, who? I played sports, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come—becoming polished, branding, the look, whatever it is—but coming from sports, I never thought about what I looked like, or beauty, or muscles, or things like that. So when people were criticizing me for looking like my dad, I struggled with it.”

Charlotte made it clear that those early reactions affected her more than she let on at the time. Instead of leaning into her confidence, she admitted that she spent too much time trying to win over critics who weren’t going to change their minds. Looking back now, Charlotte believes she should have handled the criticism very differently and embraced the perception surrounding her legacy from the beginning.

“I should have never catered to wanting their approval. What really would have made me dominant is saying, ‘Y’all wish you were me. I was born with a silver spoon—what are you going to do about it?’ If I had that energy, instead of being like, ‘I’m sorry for being Ric Flair’s daughter, but I work really hard…’ I really wish in those earlier years I had just been like, man, what if I came out there and said, ‘Yep, I didn’t have to do a damn thing.’”

Charlotte’s comments show how deeply fan reactions affected her mindset early in her WWE run, especially while trying to carve out her own identity separate from her father’s legendary legacy.

Over time, she transformed those early struggles into confidence, eventually becoming one of WWE’s most decorated champions and one of the most recognizable figures in women’s wrestling.

Do you think Charlotte Flair handled the early criticism the right way, or should she have leaned into her legacy sooner? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
