Chad Gable finally broke through at SummerSlam 2026, forcing Penta to tap out and capturing the Intercontinental Championship in front of his hometown crowd in Minnesota.
The win gave Gable the first singles title of his WWE career after years of coming close and being pushed in several different directions. This time, there was no alter ego, no comedy and no excuse. Gable walked into SummerSlam focused on gold and left with the Intercontinental Championship around his waist.
Penta had plenty of support, but the crowd came alive for Gable as the two traded control throughout the match. Penta landed a wild dive over the top rope, while Gable answered with a German suplex in the corner and several attempts to lock in the ankle lock.
The fight became even more brutal on the apron. Gable hit another German suplex, but Penta came back with a Mexican Destroyer that left both men scrambling to stay in the match. Gable kept attacking the ankle and eventually trapped Penta in the submission again. This time, Penta could not escape and was forced to tap out.
The victory brought Gable’s long chase for a singles championship to an end. He earned the opportunity by winning a gauntlet match on the July 13 episode of RAW, then made the most of it by beating the same man who defeated him in Penta’s WWE debut.
SummerSlam gave Chad Gable the biggest win of his career, and he did it in the one place that made the moment even bigger. After years of waiting, Gable is finally a singles champion in WWE.
