AJ Lee missing SummerSlam may not have been the biggest setback coming out of the weekend. Brie Bella’s injury could end up being the real game-changer.
During a WrestleVotes Q&A, JoeyVotes revealed that before Brie suffered a broken scapula at SummerSlam, the direction appeared to be pointing toward a tag team match featuring AJ Lee. He noted that Brie going down with a broken scapula will force WWE to rethink much more than just The Bella Twins’ immediate future.
“The writing on the wall was there for a tag match between Paige and AJ Lee taking on The Bella Twins. Now that Brie is out, for upwards of six months, it does affect it a little bit.”
TC agreed, calling the timing especially unfortunate given Nikki Bella had only recently returned to WWE, following her own injury.
“Unfortunate timing too, just to get the return of Nikki Bella. Now here we have Brie Bella out of action. Now you can move forward with the one-on-one between Nikki and Paige.”
That’s a pretty interesting twist considering AJ Lee never showed up at SummerSlam despite weeks of speculation that she could be involved somewhere on the card. Now, if this update is accurate, Brie getting hurt may have closed that door before WWE ever had the chance to open it.
The injury happened during SummerSlam when Brie crashed shoulder-first near the steel ring steps. She later confirmed she suffered a broken scapula, an injury that’s expected to sideline her for months. That leaves Nikki Bella without her longtime tag team partner just as WWE’s storyline with Paige is heating up. Whether AJ Lee was actually headed back is still unknown.
But if WWE really was building toward AJ Lee and Paige vs. The Bella Twins, SummerSlam may have changed those plans in an instant. Instead, all signs now point toward Nikki Bella and Paige settling things one-on-one while Brie begins the long road back.
