Brie Bella wasn’t supposed to finish her SummerSlam match. As it turns out, WWE officials were seriously considering stopping the match after she suffered a broken shoulder—but Brie had already made up her mind.

No matter how much pain she was in, she wasn’t leaving before Nikki Bella got her comeback. Speaking alongside her sister on their latest vlog, Brie pulled back the curtain on the frightening moments after suffering the injury, admitting she knew almost instantly that something had gone terribly wrong. Even so, quitting never crossed her mind.

“I don’t know if it’s because we’re people pleasers, but the whole time in my head I’m like, ‘No, I got to stay in so Nikki can get the hot tag.'”

According to Brie, people backstage were already talking about ending the match early. She wasn’t interested.

“They were telling me, like, ‘Stay down.’ Or they were thinking about calling the match… ‘No, no, no.’ Even though I was in crazy pain, all I could think about was, ‘Nick’s got to hit that comeback.'”

The pain wasn’t something she could simply ignore. Brie revealed she could actually feel the damage in her shoulder and immediately realized several planned spots were no longer possible. Instead of wrestling the match they’d laid out beforehand, she spent the rest of the bout improvising while trying not to let the audience realize how badly she was hurt.

“I could feel it. I didn’t do the missile dropkick. I didn’t do the backdrop. I broke my right shoulder. My right’s my strength, so… I had to throw forearms with my left.”

That left her worrying about something fans probably never noticed. Rather than focusing on the injury itself, Brie became convinced she was dragging the match down.

“It was in my head. I go, ‘I feel bad. I feel like I’m the weakest link right now and making everything look sloppy because I was injured.'”

Nikki immediately shut that idea down. In fact, she said fans had the exact opposite reaction.

“Not one person is saying that. The match actually was such a great match… People knew you were injured. People are just beyond blown away that you finished the match.”

As the sisters reflected on what happened, Nikki couldn’t help noticing history repeating itself. Earlier this year, she finished a match despite breaking her ankle. Now Brie had done almost the exact same thing with multiple breaks in her shoulder.

“It’s crazy because how we both finished matches with really bad breaks… Wild that you did that with multiple breaks in your shoulder.”

Brie is now waiting to learn whether surgery will be necessary, but admitted the hardest part isn’t the recovery itself. It’s the thought of watching Nikki wrestle without her again.

“I just don’t want to do this again without you.”

For now, Brie is beginning physical therapy, resting at home and hoping to avoid surgery. Her SummerSlam return lasted just one match, but after refusing to let a broken shoulder end the bout, she’s already made one thing clear—she has no intention of letting the injury become the final chapter of her WWE story.
