BJ Ray thinks a lot of wrestlers are making things way harder than they need to. The former WWE LFG star jumped on Twitter on June 7 and basically told the wrestling world that getting over is not rocket science.
Ray said he figured it out fast when he got into the business, claiming he got over within about six months. He also gave himself credit for bringing modern internet culture and “brain rot” content into wrestling before others started running with the idea.
“Getting over is not that hard, okay? I mean, I did it within probably about six months when I got in the industry.”
Ray then went even bigger with it, saying he was the first person to bring that kind of modern-day culture into NXT and pro wrestling.
“When I came into NXT, man, I was the first person to blend modern day culture, brain rot, all that good stuff, and bring it into pro wrestling. Nobody was doing it.”
He didn’t stop there either. Ray said other names are now following the blueprint he laid down, pointing to Je’Von, Vanity Project, Mr. Marketable, and Ben Bishop as examples of wrestlers using the kind of online marketing approach he believes he helped popularize.
“Even on the independent scene, dude, nobody was using the marketing abilities. And now you got guys like Mr. Marketable and Ben Bishop. These guys, bro, they see my blueprint.”
Ray said that was the whole point, because he wants to help the wrestling industry get better. His advice was simple: stop being dry, pull out a camera, and actually show people who you are.
“I wanted to show people and I want to help the industry. I want to make the professional wrestling industry better. And it’s not really that hard, guys. Just pull out your camera, be yourself, don’t be dry.”
Then Ray really turned the confidence up, saying he believes he has the most creative mind in the business right now.
“I’m not trying to sound cocky, I gotta keep it a buck. I think I’m the most creative brain in the business in our century, in all industries.”
That is a hell of a statement, but BJ Ray clearly believes he cracked the code. In his mind, wrestlers do not need to sit around waiting for someone to hand them a spotlight when they can build their own audience with a phone and some personality.BJ Ray may sound cocky, but that seems to be the point. He is telling wrestlers to stop being boring, start using social media properly, and quit acting like getting noticed is some impossible mystery.
