The New Day made a career out of getting completely ridiculous ideas over with WWE fans, but Big E wasn’t exactly sold on everything Xavier Woods came up with. In fact, the group’s famous unicorn horns were originally a step too far for him.

Big E looked back at some of The New Day’s strangest ideas during his appearance on Under The Mat. The conversation turned to the unicorn horns that eventually became part of the group’s look and merchandise, and Big E admitted he initially thought the entire thing was ridiculous. He explained that the success of the horns ended up teaching him something important about trusting Woods’ creativity, even when his first instinct was that an idea should never make it to television.

“You know, I thought it was a silly idea, if I’m being honest. I thought the whole unicorn thing was silly, but it was eye-opening for me because I realized a lot of the things that I thought were silly and stupid and that we probably shouldn’t do, I just said, ‘Okay, you know, Woods is inventive. Let’s give it a shot.’ And it worked out.”

The fact that WWE fans actually bought into the gimmick took things to another level. Big E joked about how absurd it was that The New Day could put unicorn horns on their heads and turn them into merchandise people wanted to buy.

“Now, seeing that we could actually strap this phallic device to the top of our heads and sell it to people, it was eye-opening.”

Despite his original reaction, Big E made it clear that he looks back fondly on the weirdness The New Day brought to WWE.

“It was eye-opening, but no, I’m proud of the nonsense that we showed.”

The interviewer then pointed out the obvious: Big E had no problem throwing pancakes, gyrating in the ring and doing plenty of other ridiculous stuff, yet somehow unicorn horns were where he initially drew the line. Big E couldn’t really argue with that.

“That was the line. That was too much for me. Yeah. Humping the ground, cool. Spanking men in the ab stretch, all very normal for me.”

The unicorn horns ended up becoming another memorable part of The New Day’s run, even if Big E needed some convincing before he was willing to go along with it. If anything, the whole thing showed just how far the group was willing to push an idea once they realized fans were having fun with it.
